Buyer’s Guide

There is a great deal of features that differentiate one hose from the other. Things like colour, dimension and extra features such as its capacity to withstand elements like twist, make it even harder for one to make the ideal choice when opting to buy a farm hose. So, if you happen to be in such a position, here are some of the things you might need to know.

THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR

How Long?

In contrary to popular belief about hoses, longer is never the perfect alternative. Put differently, never buy a stretch-lengthy hose because, the longer the hose, the heavier it becomes. And trust me, you can’t get much done when struggling to drag a heavy hose, which could leak easily. Instead, opt for shorter ones that have great burst capacity.

How Wide?

Unlike the stretch-length, it is ideal for a farm owner to purchase a hose that is shorter in stretch-length but wider in terms of width. This is because, hoses with a wider diameter(width), often enhances the quick flow of liquid through it, when compared to those with a narrow width. Plus, those with a wider width makes it less heavy. So, if you want to get much done, go for those with short stretch-length and wider width.

What Material?

Vinyl

Those made from vinyl are often cheap and feathery. Nevertheless, they are often weak in natur, and vulnerable to tangling, twists splits, and cracks. Plus, it loses quality quicker than others. So, if you’re looking for something less pricey, that can help you in liquidating your small farm, then this would be the ideal alternative.

Rubber

Thes type are sturdy and durable. They can withstand crack, tangling, twists and can be used to spread hot liquid, if that’s what’s needed at the time. Nevertheless, it is often so pricey and heavy. So, if you’re looking for something more sophisticated for your large scale farm, then this would be the perfect choice.

Rubber and Vinyl

As you’d expect, this is the strongest of them all, as they house the capacity of both the vinyl and rubber hose in one fitting. Plus, it is often safe for kids and pets to drink from it. Nevertheless, when buying any of these, ensure to check the label if it is absolutely safe for drinking, as not all are. Overall, they are often costlier than the rubber ones.

How Strong?

Purchasing the strong ones will save you the cost and stress of having to replace them each time they start malfunctioning. Thus, look out for those with a bursting capacity of up to 350Psi and above. This is because a hose’s strength is determined by its burst pressure capacity.

How Flexible?

Another thing you’ll need to look out for is how flexible it is. You don’t want to keep struggling whenever you want to bend or transport the it. So, when opting to purchase a farm hose, try bending it into a “U” shape, as that will give you a hint on how flexible it is. Often, the rubber or mesh liner types are known to be the ideal ones in terms of flexibility. Nevertheless, avoid extremely flexible ones, as they could twist easily, thus causing it to crack, spill and get damaged easily.

What Type of Couplings?

If you buy a cheap hose, you’ll most likely have plastic made couplings, which are often vulnerable to cracking, braking, and leaking. That’s why it is never durable. On the other hand, we have metallic couplings which are often made from brass. These couplings which are mostly found in higher standard ones that can withstand any form of leakage, which in turn makes it to be highly durable. However, they are stiff to tighten, thus making it a bad alternative for those with pain-related diseases like Arthritis.

Forms of farm hoses

Substantial farm hoses

These type are made for less demanding farm tasks. Often, they are manufactured using vinyl, which may come with mesh or diverse layers, and a plastic coupling. As a result of these features, they are always feathery, with a maximum stretch-length of 50 feet. They are affordable in price.

Sophisticated farm hoses

This is the opposite of light-duty hoses as they are made with rubber and metallic couplings, which makes it highly durable and ideal for large scale farming. Nevertheless, they are often pricey, and heavy to be carried about.

The Flat Type

These are more like the ones the fire department uses in extinguishing fire from buildings. They are often made from vinyl, which enables it to be extra flexible. It is a perfect choice for those who have a little space of storage, as these flat type can be stored anywhere without hassle.

The Soaker Type

These type is made with porous walls, which works perfectly for those that would want to irrigate their farms. Often, soakers are made from a combination of plastic and rubber. Its porous walls enable it to disperse liquid through a thousand number of tiny holes, thus properly hydrating the farm’s soil. Plus, it can either be buried in the soil or placed on the surface.

The Coiled Type

Like a coil or spring, it is often tied into a tight spiral formation. It works by pulling itself together when kept in storage, and pulling out when in use. Most times, they are never longer than 25 feet. And a 25-foot coiled type will always pull out to about 15 to 20 feet, when in use.

The Expandable Type

These type are often feathery, and can expand up to about triple their original stretch-length. They are often predesigned in a number of colours and are ideal for less demanding farm tasks. Nevertheless, over time, they lose their capacity to completely contract to their original magnitude. And when this happens, it becomes quite hard for you to store them.

In a nutshell, farm hoses make it a lot easier to liquid your farm. Nevertheless, you need to make your choice based on what purpose you’d want to use it for, and how well you want it to last for you. Cheers!

I don’t have such big garden for buying something expensive and suitable for heavy tasks, I just wanted to find something for usual watering. My choice was Scotts MaxFlex Heavy Duty Garden Hose and I can’t complain about the way it works. My only hope is that it will be durable and I won’t be disappointed one more time that I preferred something cheap to the expensive variant.

I’m tired of buying things that broke very fast. I’ve bought a hose not long ago and last week it started leaking between the crimping and the coupling. I’m absolutely sure that all hoses of this brand do the same so I’m searching for a new hose once again. I won’t tell the brand because it doesn’t deserve even being mentioned in comments.

Before I bought The Dramm 17006 ColorStorm all my hoses were typical ugly rubber hoses that rub off my hands, but this one is perfect! No jokes. Just look at this one – bright color, light weight, flexibility, corrosion resistance and more and more other features. So why don’t you pay some dollars more and buy a good-looking hose, which also is very functional?

I don’t think there’s the best garden hose on the market. They all have their disadvantages and every time your goal is just to find a compromise, which minus won’t be so crucial for you. For me it’s durability, I don’t mind if the hose is broken after a season of work. For me, the most important is that it has been working for all the last months.

Teknor Apex NeverKink is inexpensive and available in different lengths and diameters, so I bought two products at once for different tasks. These hoses are durable and didn’t bring me any problems, so I can recommend them to other garden owners.

I haven’t seen a comment about Teknor Apex NeverKink, but it’s a great budget option that I can recommend for everyone. If you’re looking for a nice product – this is the one you’ve been searching for.

Sometimes I forget that water temperature can be damaging, so not one garden hose was ruined because of hot waves. That’s why now I’m searching for a hose resistant to such water conditions. Do you think I’ll find it?

Due to its aluminum couplings, the Teknor NeverKink is quite sturdy. I not only use it in the garden but also enjoy washing my car.

If you can’t offer me something better than The Briggs and Stratton Rubber Garden Jose, don’t offer anything. This is the best thing I’ve ever bought for my garden. Very reliable couplings and the hose itself.

I have the first also. It comes coiled, so be sure to lay it in the sun (empty and/or with water) after connecting it to reduce the its coil “memory.” It will relax after a few uses and some time in the outdoor warmth.

I bought Water Right too. Other buyers have complained about the low flow. I don’t find it that low, but find it perfect to water both pots and beds without overwhelming delicate blooms

GrowGreen Expandable hose really works well, perfect size and length, the nozzle has a few different modes, so I use the hose for different uses, highly recommend.

I added a Farm Innovators, Inc TC-3 adapter outlet to our Camco TastePURE to plug hose into so it turns on at 35 degrees and off at 45 degrees. Works beautifully!

The Gilmour Flexogen couplings can be secured with plumbing, this is not a problem. And the rest, the hose is great!

I have been using The GrowGreen Expandable Garden Hose in year 3. Still intact and strong.

Teknor Apex NeverKink hose is heavy, but is far more kink-resistant than the previous cheap hose that I had. It’s not quite “neverkink”, more like “rarely kink”, but I think this will last a long time. Very thick and sturdy.

Very impresses with Teknor Apex NeverKin hose. 3/4 gives more stream and from the couplings, to the hose, it is heavier than any of my past ten hoses. A little heavy to move around but worth it.
